SSR
Objective: Research has demonstrated that the best way for students to increase their own reading proficiency, is simply to read. The purpose of the Sustained Silent Reading program (SSR) is to provide our students time to read within the instructional framework of the school day, in an effort to foster the desire to read outside of school, as well as to increase our students’ scores on standardized tests such as the WASL.
The students will be reading materials they bring in or that teachers have in their classrooms. These materials may include magazines, poetry, novels, newspapers, biographies, etc. The students will be reading for the full length each reading period (20 minutes).
At the end of each semester, each student may earn up to .125 credit for the reading period.
SSR will occur on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 11:25 to 11:45.
