Field Trip Policy

There have been some recent changes to the Field Trip policy and we wanted to make sure that you were aware of them since they impact all of you as you plan student activities. Attached are the revised procedures for Field Trips as well as the revised Student Drive Form. The revisions reflect current state law regarding drivers under 18. In addition, we have added some clarifying language to reflect what current practice is in other areas. A quick synopsis of the changes:

1. Students may no longer drive on field trips unless they are at least 18 years of age. This would also pertain to off-campus practices for athletics. (We know that some 16 and 17 year olds don’t fall under this law at the moment because they beat the deadline but monitoring it would be cumbersome for all.)

2. The use of student drivers should be avoided if possible.

3. No student may drive to an event outside of King County.(KingCo schools are within King County)

4. No student may drive on an overnight field trip. (Let DECA advisors know about this!)

5. Student drivers - if we must use them - may only have two passenger in the car with them.

6. If students (such as ASB) have meetings in the morning at locations outside of their home campus, they are to report to school first, then proceed to the event/meeting.

7. At no time will there be more than 10 students per 1 adult chaperone.

8. Vans - a van transporting students may have no more than 10 individuals (including driver, other adults, and small children that take up little space!) riding in it. In other words, if it’s a 15 passenger, no more than 10 individuals may be in the van. This is state law for us.
